Tyson Finds Avian Flu Virus

Tyson Foods officials have detected the presence of an avian  influenza virus in a flock that had been bred at a contract unit. Some 15,000 hens were slaughtered in Lincoln County, Tenn., they report.  

The Tyson officials say that the strain, in this case it is the H7N9 virus, represents no risk to human health. It is not to be confused with Type A H5N1, the strain that caused the avian flu scare in Asia, Africa and Europe in recent years. 

According to additional reports out of Tyson, the company will increase surveillance in other plants close to the affected area to make sure there is no risk of further contamination.
