USDA has allocated $234.5 million to 70 U.S. agricultural and food trade organizations to help promote American food and agricultural products overseas in fiscal 2010.

The money is provided under the Market Access Program and the Foreign Market Development Cooperator Program, both of which are administered through USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service.

Market Access Program dollars can fund such areas as market research, consumer promotions for retail products, technical capacity building and seminars to educate overseas customers about U.S. export products. The USDA funding that will be distributed to meat related efforts of interest to the pork industry included:

  • U.S. Meat Export Federation $15,679,189
  • U.S. Hide, Skin & Leather Association $106,281
  • U.S. Livestock Genetics Exports, Inc. $928,851

The USA Poultry and Egg Export Council also received $5,134,174.

Foreign Market Development Cooperator Program activities focus on reducing market impediments, improving the processing capabilities of importers, modifying restrictive regulatory codes and standards in foreign markets, and identifying new markets or uses for U.S. products. Some of the funding allocated to meat and poultry export related efforts included:
  • National Renderers Association $888,947
  • U.S. Hide, Skin and Leather Association $146,322
  • U.S. Livestock Genetics Export, Inc. $719,867
