Compliance with country-of-origin labeling will be evaluated in California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Nebraska, New York and Texas. The COOL survey will evaluate packaging as seen in 50 stores within the six states. The survey is due to be completed this month.
The data gathered by the COOL surveys will tell USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service:
- The total and percentage of commodities that are labeled according to COOL.
- The number of stores that had products with COOL labels containing abbreviations.
- The number of stores that had products with COOL labels containing the terms "or" or "and/or".
- The number of stores whose information was contradictory, when they provided information about specific commodities in more than one form.
- The number and percentage of notification statements for muscle cuts of meat covered commodities labeled with multiple country of original declarations.
- The number of origins and specific countries included in notification statements for ground meat covered commodities.
- The notification method of conveying country of origin information for muscle cut and ground meat covered commodities.
